MILLING ALGAE EXTRACT FOR BIO-PHARMACEUTICAL INGREDIENTS

A biotechnology company working with algae (red algae and cell wall polysaccharides) approached Quadro to help them with the milling of these materials. Due to their hygroscopic nature, these materials needed to be exposed to as little air as possible as the material's characteristics become spongy and in extreme cases, become contaminated with bacteria. Obtaining a high yield is crucial as it takes on average, four months to develop 3.5 kg of the product for a $40,000.00 manufacturing cost.

The Quadro® Fine Grind F10 was introduced to size reduce the algae cells and provide a very narrow PSD bell curve. The F10 successfully milled the material to a d 90 of 36.4 micron, d 50 of 16.2 micron and d 10 of 5.3 micron, respectively. The F10 also offered product recovery of close to 100%, a significantly important benefit given the very high cost of the raw material. In order to safeguard the product during shipping, the product was packed in dry ice.

The Quadro® Fine Grind F10 is a complete stand-alone process plant that affords benefits to the processor including savings through reduced downtime, minimal space requirements, rapid product changeover and enhanced process efficiency . Other advantages include quick disassembly for maintenance, tooling change and cleaning, low power consumption as compared to traditional mills, and low noise . The Model F10 promotes uniform grinding capabilities producing higher yields on-specification and has a wide tooling selection to meet all grinding requirements.
