CONVEYING SORBITOL POWDER

Background / Requirement

The material to be conveyed was a very fine, dry, dusty, white compressible powder. The customer wanted to convey the Sorbitol powder 10 ft vertically and 6 feet horizontally with a capacity rate of 2000 lb/hr. They also wanted to do additional testing on the Quadro Vac to determine whether it was possible to set the timings to convey a 31 kg batch within plus or minus 200 g.

Quadro Vac Performance

Two separate tests were done on the product using a Quadro Vac 820 with a 5 HP pump. The first was a capacity test and the second was a batch test. The test material was picked up using a 2" wand and then discharged into a 10 gallon pail. In the first test, the product was densely compacted within the drum and was difficult to wand out. However, the capacity obtained was excellent and on target. In the second test, the powder discharged from the first test was reconveyed through the Quadro Vac again and the batch test was run. Since it was aerated in the first test, the powder became a much more free flowing powder. The final weight of the discharged product was only 60 g above the 31 kg. The results were well within the range of plus or minus 200 g. Due to the aerated nature of the sorbitol powder in the second test, it was recommended that the fill time be reduced to 9 seconds to compensate. Fill time for compacted material was left at 12 seconds.

Summary

The Quadro Vac is an excellent vacuum conveying system for free-flowing and densely packed powders such as sorbitol. It is capable of good transfer rates and can convey batches within a tight tolerance range.
