TABLET COATING/GRANULATION SOLUTIONS
 

Background / Requirement

Cellulose ethers, more commonly known as “gums”, are difficult to disperse in aqueous solutions and have the tendency to form lumps or “fisheyes”. Pharmaceutical processors endure excessive mix times, air incorporation, and filtering in an attempt to overcome this problem. Very often, color consistency and shelf life can suffer. Quadro manufactures specialized mixing and powder dispersion equipment that provides instant and effective dispersion of powders for tablet coating and granulation solution applications. Quadro’s line of versatile mixing and powder dispersion equipment has proven its effectiveness in improving many processes in the pharmaceutical industry. Quadro Ytron equipment can successfully process a wide range of tablet coating and granulation solutions containing cellulose ethers, pigments, aluminum lakes, iron oxides, titanium dioxide, starches, plasticizers and binders into aqueous, hydroalcoholic or solvent based solutions.

Y Jet Mixer

The Y Jet Mixer uses a unique rotor/stator mixing head that creates a pure axial flow discharge jet resulting in a consistent product throughout by eliminating vortexing and minimizing undesirable air entrainment. The addition of the bypass assembly for powder dispersion provides lump-free, subsurface dispersion of powders into the liquid phase.

The Y Jet Mixer is ideal for pharmaceutical applications because of its sanitary, all stainless design and requires no “unsanitary” baffles in the mixing vessel. The Y Jet Mixer is an economical method for producing tablet coating and granulation solutions of up to 250 gallon (1000 L) batches.

ZC Inline Powder Disperser

For larger batch sizes, Quadro recommends the ZC Inline Powder Disperser designed specifically to disperse extremely difficult-to-wet powders into a liquid stream in a single pass. Single pass processing reduces batch times by 80% and ensures consistency and repeatability of the process.

Powder incorporation is achieved by the presence of significant vacuum in the reactor head due to the liquid seal created between the rotor and stator. This vacuum ensures that powders from the hopper above are drawn into the reactor head, where they are sheared into the liquid phase before hydration takes place. The result is a smooth, consistent, lump-free slurry. The ZC Inline Powder Disperser is capable of processing solutions from 10 to 120usgpm.
