SIZE REDUCTION OF FROZEN HUMAN BLOOD PLASMA

Background / Requirement

A large, North American pharmaceutical company approached Quadro with an application to produce approximately 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) chips of frozen blood plasma from blocks measuring 6 x 2 x 6 inches (15 x 5 x 15 cm). The frozen plasma (-40C) needed to be dissolved very quickly into a liquid batch. In order to accomplish this in a very short period of time, the large blocks needed to be size reduced to increase the surface area. The biodegradable, sensitive nature of the product dictated that the blocks had to be size reduced quickly with no product melting, heat rise or excessive impact or shear forces. The ideal ground product would melt immediately upon contact with the liquid batch. Obviously a sanitary grinding mill was required.

Comil Performance

The Comil accepts the frozen blocks of plasma directly from the freezer, size reduces it to the proper size with no product melting, and discharges this ground product immediately into the liquid batch. The plasma melts almost immediately upon contact with the liquid.

Summary

The Comil’s low RPM, low energy, gentle grinding action makes it ideal for this type of application, where the product is sensitive and product quality must be preserved. The overall acceptance of the Comil in the pharmaceutical industry attracted this customer to Quadro. The features of the standard sanitary design were ideally suited to this company’s cleaning requirements.
