CORTICOSTEROID OINTMENTS AND CREAMS

Background / Requirement

A Canadian Pharmaceutical skin ointment and cream manufacturer wished to remove lumps of grease-like filler/base from his product as well asparticles (grit) of active medical ingredient. This manufacturer also wanted a homogeneous blend of medicinal ingredients in base with the resulting cream/lotion being smooth, lump and grit free. Wet dispersion of powders into pastes, is a standard application for the Comil. The following Comil and tooling was sent to this customer on a rental basis for in-plant testing.

Comil Performance

The resulting product discharged from the Comil was a very fine paste containing no “grits” of medicinal ingredients or lumps of base. Subsequent quality testing revealed an excellent homogeneous blend of medicinal and base with little entrained air.

Summary

The customer found that with the purchase of an assortment of screens and impellers and, by minor speed changes (made simply due to the supplied variable speed drive), he was able to size reduce, blend and disperse many of his other products with the Comil. This versatility, low heat, gentle grinding action and the ability of the Comil to accept a pump feed to reduce air entrainment, prompted a quick purchase of the Comil rental unit.

Quick change components, sanitary design and ease of cleaning were all factors contributing to the Comil as the tool of choice for this Pharmaceutical manufacturer.
