RECLAMATION OF HARD AND SOFT CANDY

Background / Requirement

During the manufacturing process of hard and soft candies, 3-5% scrap is typically produced. Scrap candy is very high in sugar content which makes its reclaim extremely attractive to candy manufacturers.

The customer wanted the Comil to reduce the candy to powder. Then the powder would be dissolved in hot water so that it would mix quickly when reintroduced to the original mixer. Other mills had great problems particularly with soft candies.

Comil Performance

After several trials, Quadro realized that the Comil could produce exactly what was required by adding hot water with the candy and passing the material through the mill twice. The first pass (top Comil) produced a chunky syrup; the second pass (bottom Comil) equipped with a much finer screen dissolved the candy and produced a smooth syrup. In order to make a practical system, the multi-Comil was designed and presented. If a syrup is not desired, the Comil can also produce powderized hard candy.

Summary

The Comil was able to accept an infeed of dry candy and produce a thick syrup ideally suited for reclaim. The Comil’s pumping discharge action and sanitary design makes it ideally suited to handling this difficult product in the confectionary industry.

If a dry powdered candy is required, then only one pass and no water is needed.

This is an excellent trouble-free application for Quadro’s Multi-Comil.
