PREBREAKING BLOCKS OF LATEX GUM BASE

Background/Requirement

A large manufacturer approached Quadro with an application to size reduce large blocks of Latex Gum Base (5 inches x 5 inches x 2 inches, or 127 mm x 127 mm x 50 mm) to a free flowing 1/2 inch (13 mm) particle size. This very heat sensitive product was required to be in a free flowing form so that it could feed a new extruder at the plant. The extruder accepts the free flowing gum base with flavour and sugar and produces various gum shapes and types.

The Comil was able to produce a continuous stream of 1/2 inch (13 mm) or less particles from 5 inch (127 mm) pieces at a rate of 5,000 lb/hr (2,300 kg/hr.) trouble-free.  This product is very heat sensitive and tends to stick to any machinery surface.  To prevent problems, the Comil was pre-cooled with liquid nitrogen prior to the actual milling.  Comil components were kept to cool during milling by the additon of liquid nitrogen directly into the screen area.  This was accomplished by way of Quadro's nitrogen spray assembly.

Summary

The gentle grinding action of the Comil was able to size reduce this very heat sensitive latex gum base with a minimal use of nitrogen.  The product produced was ideal for the extruder.  A calcium carbonate anti-caking agent is meter fed into the Comil along with the gum base.  The Comil's natural mixing action ensured an even distribution of the anti-caking agent.  Screen blinding and product smearing has never been a problem.  This is an excellent, trouble-free Comil application.
