BINDER DISPERSION FOR BLUSH AND FACE POWDER

Background/Requirement

After the pigments are dispersed in the dry blend form, the binder (mineral oil) is added to the blend. This is usually added in a blender with an intensifier bar, at a 4-10% concentration by weight. The mill is used to disperse the binder. If the binder is not dispersed, it will show up as dark oil spots in a compact. Due to the oil content, the product does not flow through the mill very well.

Comil Performance

To improve the flow of this oily product through the Comil, Quadro’s Engineers applied a special *Q-coating* on the contact surfaces of the Comil. The contact surface area was also reduced by using our Comil with an outboard spindle assembly design. The screen required for the blush powder was different from that required for the face powder, due to the difference in the oil content. In both cases, the binders were dispersed to specifications (without any oil spots on the compact). Changing screens on a Comil takes less than 3 minutes. The Comil ran very quietly (75dBA) and can be cleaned in less than 20 minutes. The Comil can also be cleaned very easily in the processing area, which the customer preferred (unlike the pulverizer which had to be cleaned in a wash down area).

Summary

The Comil provided an excellent dispersion of binders at a much higher capacity, with much less dust and noise generated. The changeover time was improved by more than 75%.
